West points to the failure of the new Black middle class. A relative term not used in a Marxist sense , he notes that the middle class historically constituted no more than five percent of African-Americans before the civil rights era. I have not been able to read the book because of lack of funds. West argues that we are in the midst of a spiritual blackout characterized by imperial decline, racial animosity, and unchecked brutality and terror as seen in Baltimore, Ferguson, and Charlottesville. Second, the failure of the traditional civil rights leaders lets narrow nationalists like Louis Farrakhan and Al Sharpton fill the leadership void. Cornel West's Race Matters
My interest in this book came from a sociology class and a literature course I had in college around the time the book was published.
The author saw a lot of unfulfilled potential ocrnel Malcolm X, whose strong expression of rage was focused on a psychological transformation in black people, but who tragically could not live long enough to mature and examine the implications of his approach.
West's discussions and prescriptions raise more questions than they answer. If the cops aren't shooting dogs for fun, they seem to enjoy aiming at mattrs nearest convenient black person, which in turn causes a 24 hour news producer to soil his or her shorts with delusions of expository grandeur.
He doesn't really give any applications to try and fix the situation. If you are a seller for this product, would you like to suggest updates through seller support?
Cornel West has some definite opinions on many issues that plague mattere society today I'd be interested to read what West thinks now, as we stand potentially on the verge of electing a black President I'll believe that when I see it, though.
The only weak points come at some moments in his reasoning, at which he substitutes a pat conclusion or an unsourced claim for a more carefully planned argument most egregious when he calls out black conservatives for making conclusions without providing sources and context, then later in the same chapter makes a number of contentious general statements about black conservatives West has been a frequent visitor to Dartmouth in recent years.
