The findings highlight the problems of assessment and educational placement of retarded maturitty. A scale designed to measure social competence, defined as a functional composite of human traits that subserve social usefulness and are reflected in self-sufficiency and in service to others, from birth to 30 years of age.
It measures eight categories of behaviour: Publications Pages Publications Pages. The profiles on the tests can be related to diagnosis and behaviour pattern.
An inter-view is conducted with a parent, sibling, or other third party who is familiar with the person being assessed, and scores are assigned according to the behaviours that are reported to be customarily exhibited, the assessment being expressed in terms of social age or social quotient.
The fifty-six children matuity for the present study included all those who had obtained scores on measures of social maturity, visuo-spatial skills not involving symbolic concepts, and level of language comprehension. This suggests that, in severely retarded children, marked discrepancies can occur between different areas of cognitive and social development.
